Amy Sherman-Palladino had Paris Geller do that number thing when she was editor of the Yale Daily News on Season 6 of Gilmore Girls.

mollylambert:

Roseanne Barr: They all have a lot of emotional problems, writers. I was like “You guys are so freakin’ egocentric it’s a joke.” We used to do these read-throughs, and they’d only laugh at the jokes they wrote. It’s infantile. Well, I made them all wear a number and I’d have them come down, and I’d go, “Which number wrote this joke? It’s very good.”

Amy Sherman-Palladino: (creator of Alex’s favorite show Gilmore Girls, writer on seasons 3-6 of Roseanne): I was number 2. The writers did not think it was funny. Anytime you tell someone “I’m not going to learn your name, here’s your number,” you’re diminishing their worth.

Roseanne Barr: I wanted to strip them of their huge, colossal self-entitlement.

Joss Whedon: (creator of Buffy and writer for season 2 of Roseanne) The thing about Roseanne was that she had strength, intelligence - and that divisive side. She had opportunities to bring together people, where she would divide them instead. It was a brutal environment.

Chuck would be a lot hotter if he STOPPED WEARING BOWTIES. Gossip Girl is obsessed with seduction, to the point of absurdity. Chuck and Blair need to stop acting like a couple of theater kids. Seriously. Enough with the sexy mind games and furtive grasps. Just fuck and call it a day.

She alone is..."

“Beyonce is like the feds when it comes to promoting a conservative social agenda. She alone is policing social behavior like bill o’reilly is paying her do it. The whole time I’m getting down to her jams I’m just like “dang b! thats jacked up!” The messages in her songs almost always encourage patriarchy, female subservience, and heteronormativity like a mug! –pretty much conformity overall (including gender conformity) to the socially conservative status quo. In her songs, Beyonce celebrates the oppressive power dynamic that exists between men and women, while simultaneously trying to imply that women can utilize the subordinate position in a heterosexual romantic relationship to empower themselves. If he doesn’t marry you, step! That’ll show him who’s boss. She perpetuates this entanglement of systems of inequalities, such as marriage, with other concepts that have been socially constructed such as love and gender.”

-
excerpt from “If You Liked It Then You Shoulda Put A Ring On It: Beyonce and Socially Conservative Ideology” at postbourgie. (via abbyjean / perpetua)

I disagree with this entirely. I think “putting a ring on it” represents a much larger metaphor. I also believe there is nothing wrong with that song and I will defend it until the day I die.

(via tylercoates)

- I do agree — to a point. In the article she goes on to quote “Upgrade U,” which I agree is really regressive in its message, but are we supposed to understand the lyrics completely straightforwardly? (Because I can’t imagine I’m supposed to take “I can do for you what Martin did for the people” seriously.) Beyonce’s saying that she’s the little glimpse of light that makes the diamond really shine, but she’s BEYONCE. She only has one name. She’s not a trohpy, she’s a force of nature. And, you know, it’s not like the message isn’t contradicted by other songs on the same album. In “Sugar Mama,” she’s basically saying “You are my trophy.” I sort of assume that pop music involves a certain amount of role playing. Now, maybe I wouldn’t have thought that when I was in my teens, and maybe I would have picked and chosen some of B’s more conservative messages, or maybe I would’ve embraced the “Independent Woman” ones. I just don’t think it’s so cut and dried.

Interview with Matthew Weiner about Mad Men, gender

Interview with Matthew Weiner about Mad Men, gender: Sometimes when I hear writers and directors talk about their own work, I feel like there’s a big gap between what they think they’re saying and what I see the work as saying, presumably because their…

I think I have found love, and its name is Julia Sugarbaker.

I think I have found love, and its name is Julia Sugarbaker.

britticisms:

magoshasblog:

DEATH OF NYLON MAGAZINE!!!!!!!!!!![

[…]

I think the only way NYLON featuring Hilton could have worked is when she first made it on the scene. Essentially, an heiress starring in a sex tape was scandalous, yes, but she was also a “rebel” (if we can call it that) for breaking against the upper-class societal norms that she was raised with. Hilton was different because she essentially elevated the notion of “branding yourself” that Jennifer Lopez once perfected, to a completely different level, one in which your brand didn’t have to correspond with your talent or success but rather, one in which your success could be built upon the creation of yourself, or a hyper-version of yourself.

So, maybe back in 2003.

But it’s 2008.

And really, the only thing this cover means is that NYLON is looking to lose its core readership and as a once-rabid fan, I am gone for good.

Plus, at least one of their 237 reasons to love America is a Canadian guy.

Hypothesis: Artificial Sweeteners

magicmolly:

The weirdness of artificial sweeteners has to do with their proposition that a person can consume without consequence. The (disproved) hypothesis that sweeteners cause cancer was a boon to consumers of these little candy-colored packets. By restoring the prospect of dreadful consequence to consumption, artificial sweeteners made sense again.

Why? Because our Protestant morality doesn’t allow us to achieve pleasure unambiguously. A sense of guilt is imperative to the experience of indulgence. Restoring danger to artificial sweetener reaffirms the product and clarifies the experience of consuming it. Sweet ‘N Low tastes like poison.

This? Is genius.

Truthful TV Title Cards — Glark

Truthful TV Title Cards — Glark

Even Cecily von Z hates Vanessa

Even Cecily von Z hates Vanessa: I don’t really blame her; I think Vanessa is the only part of the books that really wasn’t the same or improved by the transition to TV.
